I hook them together. My Mac says it is downloading the 1.05 package, but I don't get the message saying all data will be lost. Then I get the transfer successful message, but when I check the system number it still says 1.03??????? What am I doing wrong?
Are you sure ya don't have 1.3(xxxx) and what Newton do you have 110, or an upgraded 100?

Kurt,
MobileCalc has Import/Export capability with the Mac independent of the Newton Connection Kit. We do this so you do not have to synchronize your entire Newton in order to move one spreadsheet from your Mac to your Newton or vice versa.
As RayKloss indicates, we transfer SYLK format files. But Ray misses the benefits of SYLK. First of all, almost every spreadsheet program on the market supports SYLK, therefore you are not limited to sharing files with Excel. Second, SYLK maintains data, formulas and formatting between the Newton and your Mac.
Otherwise, all of Ray's comments are accurate and appreciated (Thanks Ray!)

I'm trying to find out where I can purchase PocketCall for my NMP 110. I've tried MacConnection, MacWarehouse, MacMall, Mac Zone, CDW and even Ex Machina. Ex Machina says everyone has them but they all say they're out and on back order. Any ideas? I need it ASAP. Ex Machina claims that you can use PocketCall to sign on to AOL and pick up or transfer mail. Does anyone know if this actually works? Thanks in advance for the help - RobertM57

ISIS International sells is for about $79, either the Datalink or 4D version. If you have 4D, and can do programming in it, then it really shines. Otherwise, the Datalink version will allow you to connect and export/import to the mac w/o the bother of NCK(which 1.6 supports). They hav a board on AOL (PDA -> Industry Connection -> ISIS) or call them at 818-788-4747.

I ordered Personal Media, and received it at the beginning of this year/month. But I was waiting for a backordered 4MB memory card since I had no room left on my little 1MB card. So today, I finally got the card and was able to install Personal Media.
Great application!! I like it. Though I am very disappointed about the lack of handwriting recognition. I would like to see the "Text pad" offer recognition in the future perhaps.
The literature does state that Graffiti will work with it though. I had been resisting Graffiti despite all the great things I have been hearing about it, because to my understanding, you have to change the way you write letters in order for it work. I would rather it learn my hand writing then for myself to learn its alphabet. But I may try it anyway since it will work with Personal Media.
I really only played around with PM so far, since I just installed it tonight. I will see how I will use it in the upcoming weeks. I do like the fact that it is more like my desktop computers (i.e. Mac) in the way it works.

I have been using Diet Log about a week now, it is a very big program. I am impressed so far with its performance and data base. My only comlaint is that it uses a lot of heap and seems to need restarted ofted, the code must be sloppy (techno-jargin ;-) )
I give it *** 3 stars out of four.

I think that the Newt would be an excellent tool for portable data collection, but I'm still waiting for a database app that will:
1) Offer a small footprint (not a WHOLE lot of mem on the Newt)
2) Allow me to set up BIG entry boxes (hard to write tiny on the run)
3) Offer seamless export to the desktop, in a standard format. Best would be a desktop side utility that combines communication and output formatting, so I wouldn't have to do the "First, download the data from Newt to desk. Second, massage the file to export it as tab-delimited. Third, open the database or report generator. Fourth, import the tab-delineated file. Fifth, output to paper or screen." Too many steps.
Haven't seen Power Forms yet, was quoted "End of January" as release date last time I asked. Anyone have any input on the competing products out on the market now? Anyone have any info on products "in the pipe"?

Well, AppGen meets needs 1 (small footprint) and 2 (allow big text entry boxes); but relies on the Connection Kit for uploading to the Mac. Since we're having an introductory special of $9.95 (add $1.95 for additional electronic delivery, see press release for more info), might be worth a shot. We're thinking about providing a direct Mac connection, but it would not be a database management platform, rather a routine that shoves data back and forth without trying to synchronize.
Notes on #3: a) a direct connection between Newton and Mac implies either a "matching" database on the Mac, which would be definition be underpowered, or modifying an existing database, which would dictate the DBMS for you. Either way, you'd have to use the database package dictated by the software. Seems to me the nice thing about the Connection Kit is that it lets you use whatever you have on the desktop to manage the data.
b) The process you describe is much more onerous to describe than it is to perform, once all the templates are set up. While it would be nice if I could magically export from Newton to my database manager of choice, the templates on the DBMS end have to be predefined, coded. The real beauty of a Connection Kit type approach is that the data is captured in Newton format and can be exported in any format that fits your data management needs.

At last... Are we FINALLY going to see Pocket Quicken for the Newton?
The 1/23 MacWeek says that Apple will include coupons for free copies of Intuit's Pocket Quicken and Symantec Inc's Act! with the new MP120.
Huzzah! I've been waiting for Pocket Quicken since the day Newton hit the market, over a year ago. I've watched in frustration as one PDA after another came out, with Pocket Quicken bundled in ROM. And when Microsoft announced they were buying Intuit, I gave up; I figured Microsoft would do anything to squash (or at least ignore) the Apple market.
But if the article is correct, I'm delighted to be wrong. Can anyone confirm this? Has anybody actually SEEN Pocket Quicken for Newton? Is it any good, or will I have waited all this time for a stinky product? When does it ship? And will it (I assume) run on my MP100?
I'm all a-twitter...

What version of Notion are you using? Version 1.0 or 1.1? If using 1.1 you must install the Notion Extras (Converge, List Designer, List Manager) to have them available in the Utilities Menu. Look on your original disk for these utilities. They should be there - if not call StarCore or Eidetic. Hope this helps!

The shipping version only does uploads; but we've just gone into alpha testing on a version that does allow you to download data into a specific folder on the Newton, for doing heirarchical popups. This version will also have a graphics field type in it, as we just discovered that the Connection Kit can indeed handle graphics; although exporting graphics from the Connection Kit is something we're still working on (at the moment you have to open the graphic in the Connection Kit and cut/copy and paste to get to the graphic).

I currently use a MP100 with an Apple 4 meg card. I got Notion which is slow, but I don't mind the speed problems. What I do mind is that it is almost constantly forcing me to restart my Newton. I can't even rename a list without a restart. I downloaded App Memory, but that doesn't help me either. Any advice or am I out of luck since I use a MP100. Thanks!

There are several to choose from, but all are not created equal. FilePad looks neat and sounds good in IN Magazine reviews. It has some serious flaws in design, however, not the least of which is that fact that it eats heap space faster than my three year old gobbles Cap'n Crunch. The form design interface is frustrating (no way to copy an object you so carefully design, you have to re-design it over and over again, for example). It primarily assumes you plan to store all your information on the Newton itself. By far the best of the currently available databsae programs is Leverage. You don't get to be artistic with your forms, but it does the job very well indeed. You won;t be sorry with this program.
One of the most exciting database products coming is TabulaRasa, currently in beta testing from BrandX software. This is a combination product: you design the data collection form for your Newton and store the resulting information on the Mac. The connections between Newton and Mac are built right in--no separate connection software needed. The form designer is very powerful. This one won't be released for a few more months, I would guess.

Intuit Inc. this week will announce Pocket Quicken for Newton, which will feature direct reconciliation with Mac and Windows versions of the personal financial application.
Pocket Quicken will provide checking, credit card and cash account tracking, allowing users to keep rcords for as many as 12 accounts...
The program will allow reports to be printed and faxed but not transferred to a desktop computer. Pocket Quicken Connect, a separate connectivity pack due in spring for Windows and in early summer for Macintosh, will synchronize transactions and update balances with the desktop versions of Quicken.
A coupon for a free copy of Pocket Quicken, which is expected to ship in March, is bundled with the 2MB version of the MP120; pricing on the retail version of the program has not been set.

I pieced together sentences so it will make more sense. PocketQuicken might feature it, but it won't be availble for the Mac until Summer.
Someone was quoted $79 and I was quoted $69 for it from Inuit for a price. Maybe Intuit is rethinking there pricing again.

I downloaded this file to my Newt yesterday and can't get the demo to work. I also can't get a return call from State of the Art.
I have any MP 110 with 63% free on internal and 43% free on my 2mb card. When I download the package (I tried both NCK and PDA downloader), I get an error message on the Newt of (-48412). When I try to open the program I get an error message saying not enough memory, restart. So, I restart and try again. Usually on the second try I get into the program, but the minute I try to do anything (enter an expense), the Newt freezes up and I have to reset.
I've heard really good things about this program. Do you know if the purchased version is reliable? Also, where do I buy it and how much (I can't get anything out of State of the Art). Is it available from a source other than State of the Art?

I travel frequently and I use ExpensePlus to track all of my expenses. I have also built a version of my company's expense report that ExpensePlus then fills in.
My only problem with it is that it uses a great deal of heap space, so unless I am on the road I keep it archived using ScrollEx. Other than that it is quite nice.

Yes, Phil's right. In particular onthe 100 but also on the later models there is a fixed amount of "heap" space. Any installed applications use some of it up; when you run out you have to restart. ExpensePlus uses a lot of it.
ScrollEx and NewtCase remove hide the application so that no heap space is used.
The Newton compresses files on its own, so apps like Stuffit are unnecessary.

I thought that the problem was related to a finite number of "frames" (program structures in Newton system terms) that a Newton device can manage. You can find it in almost any mail order software catalog or in most stores.
Have not heard to many great things about it though :(
Dyno Notepad is indeed an outline package for the Newton.
I use it to take notes in college, and it works quite well save for the odd out of memory error and being a little slow, like most things on the Newton.
Just remember to double-tap to expand/condense.
It's included in the Professional Idea Manager Pack, which is a very good value (2 MB Flash RAM Card, Notion, Dyno NotePad, Mobile Math and a puzzle game).

Well, NewtCase actually cheats. What it does is basically make the newton *think* that you're removing a package without actually removing it, and keeping a pointer to the package's information. It's real slick.

Someone help me please.
I downloaded a Name utility that put an icon on the bottom of the pad. When you pop-up the button it shows a list of frequently called people (you can edit this list and make people permanent), or you can go directly to the Names Overview, and it does something else that I can't remember. The demo version only supports 3 names, but the registered version supports 19 or 20 (I think).
I deleted the demo thinking I would send in my registration before I realized I didn't have any documentation. Of course, I now find I can't live without it!

I've been using Pocket Call to access CompuServe and a few other text based services. It works very well. However, the VT100 Pocket Pack (extension for Pocket Call) is not available yet. I've heard rumors from Ex Machina that it's their highest priority.

I also had the same problem with my 110. It seems to happen to the .zip version of the pkg (I'm a NCK 4 Win user) and only to the pkgs DL'ed recently. Then I DL'ed and installed the .sit version and rename the pkg properly and seems to solve the problem with some of the pkgs.
As with the holiday95.pkg, try the newer version, I too had the problem with the first version of this and it went away with the second ver.
I tried again today with both .zip & .sit version of Wake up Week 2.6, the .zip version fail to install but the .sit installed onto my 110 w/o a glitch!

What are you using to unzip the files? Some of the older unzippers, including the one currently in WAOL and PCAO, do not properly handle files zipped on a Mac (and I suspect the file you mentioned was zipped on a Mac). Try P204G from our General/Utilities library.
Also, I don't know if this will work, but you might try running WMAC2PC (also in our General/Utilities library) on the problem files you've unzipped.

I've tried most of the demo versions of spreadsheets lately as I use them for everything (normally on my mac) but as I'm now using the Newton (also a 100) much much more I wanted a compatible spreadsheet. I found Equate (demo available on AOL) to be the best so I bought it - just try the demos, do a software search ans ask for spreadsheets - its fun !

GradePoint and Learner Profile are both from Sunburst. Gradepoint is a gradebook on your Newton screen. Learner profile is designed to let you do observational assessment of students. Another EXCELLENT package currently in beta is called Profiles in Hand, whcih works along with the Profiles module of Chancery Softworks' MacSchool software. Well, I've done it now. I mistakenly removed my old scrollex (installed the newer version) BEFORE I unarchived some packages. WHAT AN IDIOT.

I'm looking for the "tricorder" package. It pretends to turn your Newton into a Star Trek (TM) Tricorder (TM). AOL won't carry it (don't ask me why, they have no problem making accessible a zillion sound files from various TV shows and movies) so I'm looking for an alternate source. I've found a couple places on the internet but when I've downloaded the tricord.sit file and try to unstuff it under DOS (yes, DOS - that's all I have) it says that it's not really a suffit file. So does any one know where I can land a copy that will unstuff or pkunzip?
PS I don't have a problem unstuffing the .sit files on AOL.

Notion is a list manager. You create templates for your lists (decide which fields will be where) by using or modifying existing templates. The resulting lists are very useful with many powerful features. Yes, the Finder searches Notion lists.
You can buy a list designer app (about $30 if memory serves) which lets you create lists from scratch. That's really what I need to make Notion REALLY useful for me, but I can;t scrape up another $30 to throw after my first $50...
Notion is good, but I prefer ListIt (shareware $10) because it allows direct data input--you write directly on the lines of your list--instead of making you step through an entry slip. That's my personal opinion, based on what I use my Newton for. My opinion would change immediately if I coudl get the List Designer.

You can find a copy of ZipIt which will unzip pkzip files. Go to the QuickFinder (keyword QuickFinder) and do a search for ZipIt.
We have ZipIt right here in the PDA Forum--it's amoung the top 10 files in the PDA General/Utilities library.

There is a commercial package which works quite well called DynoNotePad. I have heard that it has a few bugs, but I have had no trouble with it.
Frankly, however, the best such tool I've found is KeyboardPRO from the Figgles Utilites (which I assume is in the libraries here). Using the customizer app also included, I created a custom keyboard with several variations on the "bullet" idea. They are defined as a carriage return followed by various numbers of spaces and different characters. I have three levels of indent with a dash, one with a diamond, and one that creates an arrow as so: ==>. I use that when I am at a conference and need to note something in my outline for immediate attention. This little keyboard lets me create very nicely formatted notes and outlines. It doens't give numbers, of course, but I don't need that anyway.

I see that NewtCase 2.0 addresses many of the former products shortcomings and puts it in competition with ScrollEx (and Apple's thing - whatever that is). But $49.90 for a utility for a PDA? And with no knowledge of if it is going to work with OS 2.0? I think they would do better to lower the price and clean up, and hope that Apple does not include a built-in archiver in version 2.0. Nice, but not sure it's that nice (Scroll-ex is a comfortable $20).

I just got off the phone with Intuit, and ordered my copy of Pocket Quicken.
From the day the Newton was introduced, I've said this was the ONE Newton product I would buy instantly, sight unseen. Well -- I just did.
The price is $69.95, plus tax. It's another $10 for rush shipping (which will take 4-5 business days; some rush!). This ain't no bargain -- it's costing about double the price of my desktop Quicken 5.0! And that $80 price doesn't include "Pocket Quicken Connect," a (still unreleased) utility that synchronizes directly with Quicken.

Has anyone else noticed that the excellent (and freeware) game Yachtzee found here on line does not apparently work with the latest Newton system upgrades? We don't use it often, but when we do it is an excellent time killer in the airport, etc. We found out the hard way that she no longer functions when we were looking forward to time with our favorite time killer, tapped on the icon, and BAM...system hang!

I am having trouble with Quick-figure pro doing calculations out to micro and pico decimal places. If I go out to 0.0000008, the spreadsheet would return 0.8. If I make the number .008, it will be fine.
I am doing calculations of molar ratios given micro-liter quantities using a formula which gets numbers from certain cells. Quick-figure is a nice program and would be even better if it could give me the correct number of decimal places.
Has anyone heard of a package, either shareware or a commercial product, that can selectively backup and restore info on the Newton? I'd like something more flexible than the all-or-nothing approach the connection kit provides.

If I am understanding your problem correctly, what I think is happening (I have seen it before) is that if you widen the cell it will actually say 0.8-E? (whatever). I just checked it on mine and that is how it formats such a number. Try it, and if you still have a problem, let me know.
Phil, correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think the NCK does a selective back-up???? If it does, please tell me how to do that! Also, I've found that Package Extractor only extracts packages from a recent back-up.
It would be nice to be able to tell your newt to back-up packages only, dates only, etc. (kinda like a Mac back-up program)

I tried your recomendation and after dragging the cell out fairly far, I saw the exponent. I attempted to reduce the number of decimal places that show so that I can see the number in a smaller window, but this did not affect the number. It still read 8.333333333 e-8. I highlighted the cell and went into numeric format and changed the decimal places to 3 and then tried also changing the cell to a specific number format rather than general....still no luck. At least I now can see the whole number.
You will find some reviews of Newton software packages in the PDA Quick Tips Center in the "User Reviews" area. I have more to post--just haven't had time between some travel, work, other AOL tasks, etc.

It's a flat file database/e-forms package. Powerforms is supposed to allow you to design forms on the desktop (or on the Newt), then set them up in the Newt for data collection. Once you've filled out the forms on the Newt the program is supposed to allow data transfer back to the desktop for processing/reporting. The ship date has been set back and set back... last date I heard was April 14, I was told that the delay was due to problems with the Windows implementation, but that the Mac version had been up for some time. Anyone hear anything more current?

I had a similar problem. I found it a couple of days ago at UCLA ($115) and got a student friend to pick it up for me. If you're short of UCLA student friends try your local University (if they have an Apple Program). I've never heard of a University of Santa Fe so you might have to go to UNM in Albquerque or . . . just hang a little while. I'm sure they're working their little chips off to get more to market.

It seems to me, that when I use Graffitti frequently, my batteries do not last as long. I have Grafitti on my PCMCIA card. Does anyone else see this effect? Would I consume less battery power if I were to put Graffitti on my interna storage?
I bought Coherent Visual's Rahmel Utilities when I had an MP100; on my 110, unfortunately, the shopping list program--which was quite useful--doesn't work (48406 error). It's on a card, which still works in the 100, but for some reason the 110 won't run it. Ideas?

It does shorten battery life when the Newt is accessing a flash card, so Graffiti on internal may help.

There is this disquieting tendency in the Newton software world to look at the MessagePads as "stand alone" items. Witness Tapworks (Pagemaker on a MP), Personal Media program (sort of a virtual Etch a Sketch that manages to ignore the major thrust behind the Newton system, handwriting recognition), or almost all of the calendar type programs. In each case, there is a lot of attention paid to doing work on the MessagePad, and very little as to how that work is going to be transported elsewhere.
I frequently work up speeches in Dyno Notepad (the current version is more or less stable, and I don't trust PresenterPad as far as I can throw our UNIX system at work). However, when it comes time to print up the final product, I would prefer to transfer same into MS Word for the formatting options that it presents. Guess what? Dyno NotePad only exports to a printer!!!
Until the commercial software developers realize that output from the MessagePad needs to be funneled elsewhere, not just sent to the printer, commercial packages will continue to be flawed versions of what may have been a very useful item.
I've tried everything you can imagine. The odd thing is that it works fine on the 100 (card installed). When I try installing it either on the card or internally on the 110, it installs, but generates a 48406 error the first time I try to run it. The really annoying thing is that I used to use this software almost every day.

We ignore handwriting conversion because it doen't work, period. It gets in the way of capturing information. Personal Media is for the bits of (handwritten) info, related to projects that you need to get down now, in "real time".
We do believe the Newton needs to be connected, but not just to some desktop computer when you are in the office. It needs to connect remotely, via modem or wireless, not just to a stand-alone PC, but to any computer that you can reach via internet. And that connection is not just for creating some MS Word document, it is for sending and receiving infomation you can act on.
You get stuff into and out of Personal Media by e-mail. Today that stuff is documents, "textpads". As Personal Media evolves, we are adding "data" connections back to the desktop, the enterprise and the internet, via modem (wired and wireless).
The newton does need to stand alone. It needs to help you capture, organize and communicate. It doesn't need to live in the shadow of a desktop computer any more than a cell phone or pager does. It needs to connect, to people and places. It needs to be simple and complete so regular people can use it, not just gearheads like us.

I must admit that I "did not get it" when I viewed my first Personal Media ad. A tri-fold pamphlet replete with descriptions of the ease with which I could move from workspace to workspace, all of it only a tap away. It seemed pretty neat, and I was looking forward to sliding data that I accumulated into other venues, for I take a lot of notes on the fly during the work day for later use.
Only upon second and third examination did I suspect, suspicions that were later confirmed by a telephone call to the folks at Gaia, that one of the major features of the Newton system, that of handwriting recognition, was not enabled in their product. It would seem that such a major departure from what is expected by those who have "bought into" the Newton system would have, at the least, been directly mentioned in the firm's own advertising. Alas, that was not the case.
Mr. Boyett certainly presents a reasonable case for one view of Personal Media. From the product description, it appears that slips of paper with "drawings" of your writing can be telefacsimilied here and there from his firm's product with little trouble and a fax modem. Just a short walk to the "fax" machine and there lies your note, rendered only slightly less legible by its trip through the wires of Ma Bell. In a totally "fax" (God, how I hate that word) based world, his case bears some merit. However, it is only one of several cases that might be made.
Consider the following:
You are supervising a large group of people. One of your tasks is to ensure that errors are corrected, exceptions are noted, and good performance is praised. The information that points in these directions is not presented in an orderly fashion, but rather in a random format (praise for one employee, an error by another, yet another error by another, and so on). In order to do your job well, you attempt to track these events using a device like a laptop or a Newton system MessagePad. So far, either the basic MessagePad Notes application or Personal Media (as I understand it) will function just fine at accomplishing this task.
At the end of a given period of time, you wish to report on same for the compiliation of a performance evaluation for a given employee. Here is where Personal Media falls down on the job. With Gaia's product, you have a series of pictures of your handwriting, which you can then transcribe into the finished evaluation. (As I remember it, you have to assign a keyword to the "textpad" that allows you to search for same; I could be wrong here...) Rather like keeping a wad of unindexed electronic Post-It notes, is it not? With the Notepad, you have a fully searchable digital representation of your analog handwriting that you can slam into the narrative. Write once, copy many, as we use to say in the programming field...
Admittedly, this is just another case that I have made. But, I think that most will find it equally valid as that made by Mr. Boyett.

As far as his statement "We ignore handwriting conversion because it doen't (sic) work, period" goes, I would only retort that it seems to work for me and others, vice Mr. Ihnatko's column in the most recent MacWeek. Perfect? Not by any stretch of the imagination. But, it is certainly servicible enough for me to use same, and I suspect that there are others who feel this way as well.
For those who want the cake of HWR and the eating it too of rapid note taking, there is the delayed recognition, which also seems to work just fine. I use it regularly when I want to make sure of notes on something, and I've yet to find it wanting. Trouble is, most Newton system users don't think to turn it on when they should.
In my long-overdue closing, I would add that Mr. Boyett's statement "As Personal Media _evolves_ (my emphasis added), we are adding "data" connections back to the desktop" seems to point toward something like "We're going to try to support HWR now that we got the baby born and swaddled." Perhaps I am wrong, but it seems that a more candid evaluation of the product would have at least mentioned that HWR was not supported.

First off, let me start by saying that I think that Tapworks is a very well written piece of software for the Newton system product. I make this statement because I don't want anyone to suffer under any mistaken impressions from the rest of my review.
All of the classic "Works" elements are present: text, graphics, spreadsheet, graphing (to a somewhat limited extent) and telecommunications all are represented. The document size is the page, and there does not appear to be any way of "naming" documents. Standard find and assist inquiries work with the data and text included in the page, somewhat making up for this anonymous document type.
Text recognition in Tapworks is as good or better than I experience in other MessagePad packages. All of the text style features built into the MessagePad are presented, and while the purist may bemoan the absence of fully justified text, there is little else you could ask for on this scale. A well-designed "macro" capability is included in the Text module, although it could have been a bit more accessible than the three or four taps from the "desktop" that it now requires.
In the draw mode, multiple draw textures, line thicknesses, shapes (including a reasonably large number of unusual ones) are all just a tap away. Objects can be sent to front and back, overlapped, and grouped, just like any full-sized graphics program. Alignment and nudging (but not grouping) are also furnished, controlled from a pop-up menu at the bottom of the screen.
While "tables" (or spreadsheets) are limited in size by the constraints of the Newton system, what space they provide allows access to many of the formulaes and functions provided by their full-sized sisters. Calculation, while not rapid, works as you would expect it to. Graphing, also limited by the system, works as well as Apple has allowed it to. Don't expect to chart a number of employee's performance over fifty-two separate weeks, but it will handle most simple business tasks.
Telecommunications I did not test due to the lack of a modem that would work with the Newton system, but I assume that the simple method outlined in the comprehensive manual would work as well as any other package.
While some may quibble with the modal methods of editing text (it reminds me of an early version of Pagemaker I once used), few who spend time using the product will deny that you can turn out a damn'd fine looking full page document in a reasonable amount of time.
All controls are intuitive, and even full cut and paste abilities are provided, a boon to the Macintosh- enabled among us. It works, and it works pretty well on a MessagePad 110; it would probably shine on a MessagePad 120 with two meg of memory.

All of the above aside, I have the sad duty to inform you that Tapworks for the Newton MessagePad is, at least in its current incarnation, a mostly useless product. For that reason alone, it will languish and die. This impression is further borne out by the virtual lack of any mention of same on AOL and e-world.
Read the above again, and you will find VERY little that is negative about Tapworks. Why the combination of joy and gloom? Well, it's because the authors of TapWorks have done a wonderful job of placing a "Works" style program on the Newton system, only to miss the obvious fact that there is limited call for same in the Newton world. In effect, the publishers have created an excellent miniature version of a full-sized program that will only find use where the full-sized program is not available. And that event, in the days of the laptop computer, occurs seldom if at all.
While an adroit implementation of a "works" program on the Newton, use of Tapworks is just not as easy as the use of the same type of program on a desktop. And, since most of those who need the capabilities of such a program have already use the full-sized version of same, the niche filled by Tapworks will be that of a VERY last minute means of running up a one-page graphic for a meeting after you have left your desktop and laptop equipment behind.
I actually used Tapworks for such a purpose on one occasion, where new information came in on a major government action an hour and a half before I was to present same to the big boss up in Dallas. I was able to rework one of my overheads (your federal government has not gotten to the stage of electronic presentations yet) on the plane up to Dallas, then use the PrintPack cable and drivers to print a copy on one of the MS DOS world printers my agency has in droves. Tapworks gave me a great finished product (alas, it didn't make a bit of difference in the end, but that's another story). But, had I been carrying my trusty Powerbook 100, I could have turned out the same thing in a lot less time.
One of the tenents of Newton system product design is that each package should do one thing very well. Perhaps Tapworks has failed here only because it does SO many things so very well, all in such a very small space.

Much of the stuff that you can output from the newton to a printer does not look that nice to begin with. I wou;ld much rather be able to load it into a word proc. and format it myself if need be.
Developers: Keep trying someday you will get it right.(Then maybe more people would by products like the Newton.
By the way trying to do a document Tapworks is like trying to write a novel using the Newton on screen keyboard. It is certainly possible, but slow!

I understand your point of view, and didn't mean to suggest that HWR is the wrong way to use the Newton, or somehow not important. My feeling is that when a software package depends on HWR to be useful, it has a limited market, ie. only those people who are lucky or skilled enough to get reasonable recognition.
We've tried to make Personal Media useful without requiring HWR. If you get a chance to try the software, you will see that the "post it" notes are actually automatically organized. Much more so than the notescroll can ever be. In your example on employee evaluation, I would suggest a workspace for each employee, a notepad (or textpad) for good things and another for bad. You can also store e-mail to/from that employee on the same workspace, and any other random info on additional pads. Soon you would have a complete record of activities, time sorted, visually sorted, or sorted by names of documents, or whatever way makes most sense to you.
Personal Media actually does support HWR in naming workspaces, notepads, text docs and addressing email/fax. It currently does not support HWR on notepads, and we certainly don't try to mislead anyone about that.
Personal Media will support HWR for notes in the future, because people like you (with good handwriting) have asked for it (though this is not the "data" connection to the desktop that I wrote about). The current newton tool kit does not have an ink API, so there is no reasonable (as in performance) way to deal with scaling ink the way we do and to separate gestures from characters. We could have used the built in paragraph view and HWR but we would not have been able to scale documents and have more than one at a time visible. The next version of the NTK is expected to have an ink API and at that time you will see HWR in all of Personal Media (plus better performance).
You will find, if you use Personal Media, that there is actually a benefit to leaving some kinds of information in ink. Have you ever run out of memory on the note scroll while taking notes? If not, you're not taking very many notes at a time. You have to delete the last ink that you put down and then draw a line to start a new note, and re-write the ink you deleted. That won't happen with Personal Media.
Have you every wished you could see more than one document on the screen at a time? Do you ever wish you had more than 12 folders (plus unfiled) for organizing things? Try out the package, beat us up for performance (we keep getting better & send updates for free). You will get more into and out of your Newt.
I am not generally considered to have "good handwriting" but as I have learned the Newton and it me, I get very good recognition. I will look at PM when it has HWR fully enabled.

We have a Graffiti demo in the Newton libraries here, and you can get the full product directly from Palm Computing or dealers such as the Newton Source.
On the Newton, you can keep a Graffiti button available at all times--tap on that and the Graffiti window pops up. Graffiti is an add-on program, and does not replace the Newton's built-in recognizer or keyboard--those are still available. Many of us use both recognition systems--I find Graffiti wonderful for alphanumerics or technical terms I know won't be correctly translated by the Newton.
I tried Personal Media on my MP 100 and I like the concept...but on my Newt it's too slow and there isn't even close to enough screen real estate to be very useful. But imagine running it on this....a slate-sized Newt (as I've seen on the Net- Panasonic is pre-viewing to a select few in about a week) with snappier performance and this COULD be a killer app. Time will tell...

I'm already using Graffiti. No More Keys is a utility to do what I said, replace the keyboard on double tap with Graffiti. It is supposed to give you the standard querty keyboard when you hit the keyboard icon.
I found it today on the internet. Works fine except I can't get the standard keyboard. I've e-mailed the author to ask him about it. He is available at silver@eworld.com.

With respect to the question consuming the Newton's batteries more quickly when using Graffiti, accessing the RAM card notwithstanding, it has been suggested that many are simply USING their Newtons all that much more and thereby using the batteries faster.
We haven't noticed any difference in battery life, but we've only had Newtons for as long as we've had Graffiti.

Hardy's release gave details of the shareware fee and general capabilities (similar to NewtonMail, and use of Aloha does NOT interfere with NewtonMail--both can be used).
What Craig said is true. Aloha is undergoing some final testing and tuning. I hope to make it available as soon as it is possible.
You are given 7 days to try Aloha. After 7 days a registration code is needed to continue using it.

That's awesome. I really look forward to trying Aloha; assuming it lives up to it's billing (and I assume it will :) ), the whole Newton community will owe you a debt of thanks (and about 50 clams apiece!).
When I first got Personal Media, I was initially disappointed that it did not have full HWR. But after using it now for a few months, I have to say that I do not miss it. The ink notes are good, legible, clear, and it can even be resized.
I can honestly recommend PERSONAL MEDIA to all Newton users. It is fine product, the support is excellent, and they are continually improving it. I have to say that PERSONAL MEDIA is one of my most used application on my Newton now.

You can look in your AOL setup (click the Setup button on the first screen) to see what service you are using for AOL. If it isn't Sprintnet, use keyword ACCESS to view AOL's database of numbers, or call Sprint at 800-877-5045 for a local number.
Is it subject to the same "sensitivities" of NewtonMail on Newtons such as the 100 in terms of Mailjams and the heap. I have a heck of atime with Newtmail getting anything since one of two big messages jam the sucker up. I've already reserved some dough for a new newton this year (on mines second birthday perhaps?) omce they get the heap improved, OS bumped up and above all a backlit screen. Looking forward to Aloha if my heap'll have it.

Calendar leaves me looking for more. I'm coming from Lotus Organizer and the Calendar from my Sharp 9600II Wizard. As happy and impressed I am with the Newton I'd like to at least see a full week of meetings and todos on the screen at one time. I'm not talking about Calendars abbreviated views either, take a look at any Wizard after the the 8000 series & you'll know what I'm talking about. I use Agenda & can only see one day at a time. A GOOD planner helps you plan ahead, not just today.

The stuffed version is also binhexed. Anyone wanting a copy will need something like HQXer (freeware decompression utility) to recreate the .sit file that AOL can unstuff. It's available here on AOL.

I've had no problems sending (although I wish there were a way to make the "posted on" line say "Newton/Aloha" instead of Mac 2.5.1). The only recieving problem I've had is very minor, and probably a simple formatting error. Mail sent from WAOL has the beginning of the "posted on" line cut off - I get:

Interestingly, that fragment is exactly the same lenght as the *complete* "Sent on..." line from a Mac-sent e-mail. Hardy... did you remember to account for varying lengths of this field?
Anyway, that's my only complaint, and it's almost inconsequential. Ya did a great job, Hardy! One neat thing I noticed... it logs in, gets the mail, and logs off - FAST! Much faster than a Mac or Windoze "Flash Session".

Okay, since no one seems to be mentioning it, how come nobody is coming out with a spell checker and Writing speed checker for newton? All I want is a spell checker that uses the Newton's internal dictionary for Graffiti and I want a speed checker to see how fast I type with Graffiti and to help improve my graffiti speed. why not make it into a game like Mac versions of keyboard typing tutors. It would be neat to see how fast Graffiti really is. Oh yeah, tell me when you are finished making the products and I will buy them.

I just purchased Graffiti, and tried to install it immediately, but my Newton rejected it. I cleaned up the Newton memory, but to no avail. My internal memory holds only one other software package - Personal Time and Billing. Could I really have reached my Newton limit? Must I buy a storage card for the Newton and load Graffiti onto that? So complicated. My Graffiti will sit unused until I hear from you...
How can I post a review on the Reviews board? I've been using several popular sw packages that haven't been reviewed yet and would like to post.

I've recently purchased a newton (120) after reading the reviews here about Graffiti. I had tried previous newtons with my bad handwriting - the results were predictably humerous but not productive. But with graffiti, this newt looks like it will work. I have several questions:
-What's the best book about the Newton?
-Which PIMs coordinates "to-do" lists with a mac?
I have a group of people that I would like to better coordinate simple project management. These lists are needed "in the field" and a newt would work if the info could be periodically coordinated on our mac network.
-Has anyone used InControl for workgroups integrated with the newts "to-do" list?
-Does Graffiti use the newts handwritting recognition, or is it a completely stand alone program? Any suggestions about optimizing the newt for Graffiti?

There is an Aloha section now. I had the same message and Hardy said that it had problems with decoding messages that were split by AOL. He said he is working on a fix now. We'll see.

Is there any program/package out there that will allow me to modify the frequency of a meeting to other than every week, every other week, every month, every year, every week in month. I need to repeat an event lets say for a meeting on the 2nd and 4th tuesday of every month, or every 3 days, or even every 21 days. I know it sounds weird but that's what I need. All of the calendar programs for my desktop/powerbook that I've tried did this, is there not one for the Newton? So far the Newton has replaced my Powerbook for just about everything except this. Someone please help me.

There are 2 terminal emulators. PocketCall is a commecial product and TermLimit is a shareware product. Neither support vt100 emulation. PocketCall is currently in beta with their vt100 emulation.
LunaMail (shareware) is not a terminal emulator, but is a POP3 client and might be another way for you to access your email account if your university supports a POP3 server.
The last way is to set a forwarding address (a lot of university systems support mail forwarding) to cynthia621@aol.com and it will forward your mail to your AOL account and then you can use my product Aloha to read your university mail.

Found Personal Media for $99.90 at the Tiger Software catalog Vol. V Issue 4 Item #: G11-1000.
Seemed a good price compared to the "regular" price of aprox. $140.00 I'd seen it advertised as.
So... I bought it.
And... it is pretty good for taking electronic ink notes in a medium just like a note pad. Can't use Graffiti in the notepads mode, but you can, in the "texts" mode.
Awfuly slow though.
Talked to Tech. Rep. who was very friendly and interested in my feedback. He mentioned that they are already working in a faster version. Most of the people he has talked to seemed to want only one size notepad, so getting rid of the resizeable option will speed it up tremendously.
All in all I'd recomend it to anyone needing to take down notes quickly in an organized, "normal" way.

Does anyone know of a utility out there that will allow me to change "List by" in all of the Name records in a folder (in this case 265 in one folder out of a total of 700) ? NOTE: I know I can massage the data, say in Filemaker and load it back in via NCK, but therein lies the problem. I also use Action Names and doing so means I lose all my links and history. I've already contacted iambic software and they said it's do-able via Newton programming.
If no such utility exists, are there any Newton programmers out there willing to write such a utility ? I can't be the only one that wants to do this. As long as I'm wishing: it would also be nice to be able to change the Card Style on several records at once. Being able to group records by folder or search criteria would be great too !

In the next version of Graffiti the programmers should give you the option of having the writing box shaped like a rectangle as well as a square. I've gotten into the habit of writing some of my words from the left edge to the right edge of the box,like you would naturally write. This works really good on short words.A rectangle would allow you to write this way with less space restrictions. What is the latest version of Graffiti anyway? I've got1.01
So I just got my MP100 and am quickly filling it up with apps and using all of the heap space. Obviously I need to use one of the archiving programs, and I don't very much like the Newton Utils one that comes with the Enhancement Pack.
So I have tried NewtCase, and the Newt Tools Demo. NewtCase is very nice, I very much like being able to click on the Extras button and having a list of packages/archives pop up, and it seems very fast. However, it seems awfully expensive for $49.95. I got the demo of Newt Tools, which is a few dollars fewer; NT can also do "quick archiving" and has a slew of other features, like a new styles menu, and a button bar (which always seems to be in my way, no matter where i move it to ;-)
I was wondering what people here use, if they have any recommendations, pros cons of each, etc. Any opinion would be appreciated!
I've tried Scroll-ex and NewtCase. Nothing is perfect, and I'm currently using NewtCase (it allows you to hide packages that aren't visible in Extras). I tried the Demo of NewtTools and it seems very nice. I'm betting that NewtCase will upgrade and improve. I haven'e seen a review (by Serg) on the different "compression" packages and would expect one soon. There is also Newton Utilities. At this point in the Newton OS, this type of utility is a must. Maybe by August we won't need it??? (hint, Apple).

I've loaded the FormIt app, and have made a sample form to load into my 120 to "test drive" it. But when I try to connect it first says it's connecting, then on the Mac says, "Looking for Newton." I'm going through FormIt on the Newton, where it says, install new form. Any ideas?
Also, what I really want to do is to keep a list with all of the jobs we currently have in our print shop. I would like to be able to view them as a list, in the order they're due, or resort them by press, customer, etc. I've tried Notion but it seems very slow. Can you recommend some other options?

No utility I know of can change "list by" en mass. You can do this with a small NS BASIC program, or via a custom NTK/NewtonScript program, or using Newt.

LunaRoute was not released. I use lunaMail, and am awaiting the next version which should be even better. I wrote a HyperCard 2.2/AppleScript stack that does what LunaRoute was supposed to do. It's on the lunatech ftp site. I can upload it to the libraries if anyone wants to look at it

I think there may be a package that does JUST that, my application KeyMan offers that as an option to it's alpha keyboard modifications. It's in the file libs.

I have installed GrafPatch and GrafMod programs in my Newt 120 and would suggest doing the same to anyone who relies on Graffiti for imput.
Two taps and you call up the Graffiti window which is resized much smaller, but still have the option to toggle to large view by tapping a button.
Drawbackwise, I had to install Graffiti, GrafMod and GrafPatch in internal. GrafMod would not load to PC card.
If you like the combination, please remember to
"pay for the right" to enjoy the programs.

...when I called a while back, DrawPad is "no longer supported", just like Dyno NotePad. I assume that statement means that "we're dropping this one like a hot potato", but there's no telling for sure.
Availworks (aka Tapworks) does graphs and other draw type graphics pretty well. It is large, and don't expect to get a Macintosh-style "works" program that will integrate "word processing" with everything else. Outside of those negatives, I've had little or no problem with the program in the Tapworks incarnation. It even saved my bottom once when I needed to turn out an overhead on the airplane on the way to a meeting without my Powerbook at hand...

Both have strengths and weeknesses. I've tried both, and you can too! There's DEMO version for both packages in the AOL libraries. Seach for Leverage and FilePad, donwload 'em and try them both out to see which works best for you!

You should look at Flash-Data (from ISIS International), AppGen (from Pinehill Software),
and, if you need to do really complex custom stuff,
NS BASIC (from NS BASIC Software, and written by
George Henne). I believe there are demos of AppGen and NS BASIC here in the Newton files.

Others may disagree, but I found FilePad to be lacking in many areas. I invariably find my heap space dwindled to nothing as I use it. The editor doesn't give you access to the entire screen, even though the editor is one of its big claims to fame. The docs are minimal and confusing. The poplists can contain no more than four items. There are more complaints I could mention, but the biggest by far is the heap space problems.
On the flip side, it does work and work just fine for simple db chores. It has nice printing options. While sorting and searching are slow, they are available.

I don't own a Newton but have considered one for quite some time. I work for an oilf field service firm here in the Middle East with offices all over the world. We are required to periodically conduct physical inventories of our facilities and presently use pen and printed listings to conduct the inventories. I have performed time measurements and have concluded that the majority of time is spent flipping back and forth through the listings in search of the product presently being counted. With the right database package, the Newton would be a dream come true for conducting these physical inventories of our asset inventory. A typical inventory would consist of about 3 - 5,000 assets which are inventoried by a 6 digit serial number and a 3 - 11 character product code which controls the description of the product. The product code file is 25,000 line items and consists of the 11 char (max) product code and it's corresponding 60 char (max) description. I would require a facility to enter the serial number and have the Newton display the appropriate description with some type of on screen button which would be pressed to confirm that it was physically inventoried. Upon completion I would need to pass the data to a PC for various inventory reports.
Is there anything out there capable of this on the Newton platform? I have designed beta's of my "dream" physical inventory system on Alpha4 and Lotus Approach but using a laptop is just not feasable in my environment. If I could do the same on a Newton life would be complete.

Assuming you had the storage space (you'd need a storage card, possibly a 4meg, probably a 2 meg [I get a guesstimate of 2.5meg of data, but you save some with the built in newton compression]) You could do this with Leverage, or a custom application, with no problem. You would use a checkbox field to indicate an inventoried item (and possibly a quantity field as well). Then search by id, tap inventory checkbox, save entry, and continue. When you're done, search for all records with inventory checkbox, and upload them to the PC (esp. if you fill in a quantity field).
No problem.

Even better would be if you could bar code label the inventory. Then you wouldn't have to write the products' serial numbers, just scan them. I think most of the Newton data managers can handle this task; although searching the folder with the 25,000 items may be slow.
Do you have to confirm the product code in real time? Or could that wait until the desktop?

...can be overcome (i.e., you can place stuff in the portion of the screen not visible in the editor) if you are VERY meticulous AND have a lot of time and patience.
1) Create the part(s) that you wish to place in the "forbidden area". It helps to align it on a similar part (i.e., one that is in a column with it and is to be kept in the visible area). I also recommend that any horizontal alignment desired be determined before sending the part(s) to never-never land in step 3 below.
2) Use the nudge arrow to move the part(s) to the bottom of the screen so that its/their lower edge is aligned with the lower edge of the editor area.
3) Carefully counting each tap of the nudge down arrow, nudge the part(s) down to about where your gut feeling says that they should be. Save the change.
4) Drop out of the editing process and then open up the drawer and see where the part(s) ended up. If you're satisfied, fine. If you're not, repeat steps 1 through 4 until you are, keeping record of the number of nudges needed now (actually, I didn't need the "now", but all of those en sounds in a row felt pretty good) to determine how many you need for the finished product.
As they said of the Bassamatic - "It's just that simple!" While this technique takes forever to assemble the page of the drawer (or whatever the Filemaker term is; I did all of this over a year ago and haven't touched the program since), it does give you access to the bottom fourth of the screen. It's there, it's just very difficult to get there and look like something other than a mistake.
I built (on paper) a table of how many moved what where for my future reference if I decided to purchase the full program (I didn't). I once suggested to the designers of File Pad that they include this information with the program. "That's a good idea," the young lady said as she obviously ignored me...

My guess is that the best way to handle what you want to do would be to have a "large" file residing
on a ruggedized portable desktop machine (Mac or Windows) and to keep a quick look-up set of values on a Newton or compatible PDA. The PDA could query the large file when necessary.
Connection to the portable desktop machine would be by Digital Ocean's Grouper short-haul radio-packet technology. The effective radius would be 250 feet to 800 feet, depending on how free of obstructions the environment is.
I think what you *really* want is to have a CD or mini-CD drive built into (or attached to) the PDA, or a compact hard-drive built into (or attached to) the PDA. You would in either case need to have optimized search routines to handle the sorts of searches you want quickly and efficiently.
While it is possible to hold thousands of entries in a PDA, I wouldn't recommend it in their current "incarnations". I think you would currently need to use either a desktop-type machine (in your case, a portable or laptop which would stay in a central location at a site, probably inside a vehicle) and a PDA to query the inventory data. Since you say you will need to send the data to a PC after completion, the same PC could hold the "large library" of data.
Now, I don't know if you meant that the PC you're talking about is one in the field, or one back at a permanent base (such as headquarters or a branch office). But I would guess that even if you were referring to a PC back at a permanent facility, you would probably find it more efficient to have a PC in the field send out to, and receive from, various people's PDAs, then have that PC in the field send a once-a-day compressed data-file to the PC at HQ.
After the PC would send data to the PC at HQ (and after similar field groups had sent their data from their locations), and after the PC at HQ had had time to "digest" the field info, HQ info, process changes, etc., it could send a compressed data file to the PC in the field, which would mean that each PC in the field would get fresh updates to be used the next workday.

Does anyone know any good Appointment Reminder apps? I have used AlarmPak form Atomic Software an am mixed about it.
What I am looking for is an alarm app that allows: 1) Volume to be boosted still higher. (It is extremly muffled in my leather case. 2) Icon support showing which appts have reminders (like the HP). 3) More sounds (but NO "Fur Elise") 4) Links to other apps like "Message Manager" and "TO DO". 5) Other cool features

Thanks for the quick response - I forgot that the Newton screen really includes the areas with the permanent buttons - I was looking at the edges of the "inner" screen.
I won't call it a bug but it is an interesting "trait" - In your new version of WUW - when I reboot my newt, WUW rebuilds and updates the list etc. and then my machine turns off. I only reboot from software like Quickies or SleepAid - but the behavior is consistent. Is this right? Does anyone else experience this?
If it matters I am running on a MP120 - 2meg. I have the sleep delay set to 12 hours in WUW and the sleep time on the Newton set to 5 minutes. It still dies right after a list rebuild. Would appreciate your comments. Thanks

I *believe* (no pun intended :>) that there are some freeware, shareware, and possibly commercial products sold for the Newton and other PDAs which include Bible editions. If you check the Newton Book

Hmm. This has happened to several people (including me ;-) on MP100's, but never, as far as I know, on a 120. I will check into it, but I don't think it's me, per se, but rather such a long initial delay after start up. I have an idea...look for a possible fix in 2.72 (due out soon ;-)

I have downloaded this file from AOL, and unstuffed it - loaded it onto my MP120 via package downloader (I have a windows machine). When I open the prefs - the menu item says ScrollEx 3.1 - When I launch ScrollEx from the Extras drawer - it says 3.2b. FilePad offers the ability to arrange controls on screen; Leverage offers a faster, more Newt-like interface. Leverage has considerable power, especially if you're linking to a Mac (I'm not). Both take a LOT of heap space.

lets you actually manipulate the objects in that view
- easily import clipart from another Avail application
- speed improvements

there are many other changes, but just these alone make the

I just got an error using Quicken. -48025 Basically the problem is that Quicken is doing things that are not really part of Apples' OS. Consequently this can lead to data corruption. Which has just happened to me. I can not launch Quicken and I have to do a hard reboot. They tell me I have to restore an earlier version. But if you back up, then this is not possible because you may have backed up corrupted data. So all my data is bad-----game over.... start again. I suggest we just stop using the program until this is fixed!

As MarionDel stated - the Newt enhancement pack is the best way to go. You get graffiti, Action names and newt utilities. Action names is nice, though i've only been using it a short while, graffiti works, but the newt utilities need some big enhancements, such as being able to run archived programs. That's pretty lame.
CDW has the NEP for 124.79 (800-588-4CDW). Or if your a teacher your can get it diret from apple for a teacher for 112. Not a bad deal.

I've installed GraffitiPatch on my 2meg card, in my MP 100, according to the instructions. I've made sure the keyboard is not showing, and that Graffiti is not showing - minimized or not. I have done resets of the Newton. However, whenever I try to remove the card, I get the grip 'o death.
I love this patch, and would love to keep it. Anyone have any clues, or similar/different experiences?
Has anyone out there used PosketCall? What do you think? I'm thinking of buying it. E-mail me and I'll give you a big smooch!!!!!

I am interested in the Newton line. I would like to use one to do a Direct connection to a 25-pin serial TTY terminal interface. Currently I use a laptop to perform this function. However, it would be great if I could use this powerful Newton instead. I understand there is a program called PocketCall which seems like it would allow me to do this. ...involves minimal text entry, then the Newton system may work. There are a couple of terminal emulation programs available here in the software libraries. However, for any significant amount of text entry, the Newton system, even with Grafitti, is just too slow to be a viable option...

There is also a program called TermLimit which will akow you to dialup a TTY service. It has two boxes - the top 3/4 of the screen is the terminal view, which is scrollable to see the whole screen. The bottom 1/4 is for text entry. You write out what you want to type, when it reanslates it you can tap it to perform the function. BTW - it's freeware. I've used it to call my VAX. It worked, but mostly the 'cuteness' aspect. I wasn't able to do a whole lot from the newt.

One of the keyboard based Palmtops (Zarus, PSION, or HP) might be better suited as a remote, small, portable terminal. The Newton (in its current form) is really a PDA, not a handheld computer - there is a difference!

I have not used WUW all that much, but I have seen the demo version. I use Action Names primarily because it came with the 2MB card I purchased. There are several things that AN does not do that WUW does. WUW allows you to look at not just today, but a series of days - week, month, year, etc... In AN you can only look at one day at a time. You can not view appointments for the week, which sometimes bothers me quite a bit. They said they were working on it for the next version.
If you are going to purchase one of them I'd reccomend WUW. It's easier to use and has better features. I use AN because I have it and overall it is not a bad program. It does work very well, it just has some limitations. And maybe someday, we'll have a newer version that has the features I'd like to see.

Off the top of my head I can't remember what EXACTLY I didn't like about it, but I do remember that there were some pretty obvious features missing that WUW does have. I've been using WUW for a week now and I'm hooked on it. I'll be sending in my $$$ soon.

I own both MoreInfo (with WUW) and Action Names I have moved back and forth between the two (both have features I like). I do like the Agenda overview which gives me a day agenda. I work day to day and a week is too much to see. I also like the ability to separate phone calls from other to-dos. I'm currently using AN, and hope that updates will continue to approximate my use.

I just received my copy of TimeSlips for Newton. It's actually called "Time & Expense," and it can function as a stand-alone T&E product. I haven't had a chance to dig into it yet (I'll be loading it on my Newton in a few minutes, once I clear 350 k on my card). Many of the features of TimeSlps are present, including extensive customization capabilites. The most obvious problem: no built in connection utility; you have to synch wtih NCK and then use a template to pull out the data. Not good when a synch for my takes quite a LONG time...

You can work day-to-day with Wake-Up-Week by setting the time spread for the overview to just one day. It is not necessary to show a whole week at one time.
The PDA File Search is broken (has been for months ::GRRR::) for PCers. HOWEVER, you CAN search all PDA files from the Mac Software search--I know, seems strange, but it works.
Just use keyword MACSOFTWARE and try your search from there. Mac users can search right from this forum, and hopefully AOL will get it fixed so WAOLers can, too, in the near future (it is being worked on... part of a system-wide revamp).

Where Action Names really shines is in the way it integrates the built in apps. AN adds a button to all Names and Dates screens with additional options, including ways to tie them all to each other and to the agenda screen. If you are looking for a contact manager, MoreInfo is for you. If you need a more general scheduler/agenda/to-do manager, go with Action Names. Frankly, though, either one will serve you just fine--like most software preferences, it's what you're used to. I bought Action Names after trying the demos of both that and MoreInfo. AN seemed to fit my needs better and now it's what I'm used to. When I try the demos of the new version of MI or of WUW, I see a few nice features I wish I had in AN but still prefer the one I use all the time: Action Names.
Hi, I received PQC Mac for Newton today, but I'm VERY dissapointed that unlike the NCK, PQC does NOT have LocalTalk support! This means that us LocalTalk users have to play with cables each time we want to update our ballances!!! Intuit: please, please, please, support LocalTalk on the Newton ASAP!!!!

Although, one thing I find very nice about AN is the Make Cll option. When you input a name, as soon as the word is turned into text, AN either gives you the name or a list of the names with that word. It works almost immediately. After getting the number(s) this way you can tap on AN and get the card. I find this to be a great feaure.

I have been using the demo of WUW and found it very useful, I had 2 days left on the demo when at the Macworld Expo in Boston this past week, I picked up Action Names. I had not had the chance to install it (I've been so busy trying to over come an "internal error" message from Now Synchronize for the Newton). The reason why I bought Action Names even though I liked WUW was because of one "feature" of WUW which drove me batty is even if un-select the check box in WUW preferences to start up automatically, it does so anyway. Everytime I would turn on my Newton, I would have to wait for WUW to load and sort out the data... this annoyed me. Just because I was turning on my Newton, it does not mean I want to see WUW... This is why I bought Action Names because from what I saw at the Expo it is similar to WUW without having to endore the long start up (wake ups) everytime I turned the Newton on. (though they do offer that feature if desired).
I can't comment on any other comparisons between the two since I did not install AN yet. I will say that WUW is great other than the one aspect of it which I personally found annoying, and recommend everyone to give it a try.

That feature should work and not boot up WUW on start of Newton. Try a reset, go into preferences and disable WUW on start-up, turn off, reset, then it should work. If not, there is a problem with your copy.

It isn't really fair to compare WUW and Action names. WUW does its one thing extremely well, better than Action names. But Action Names has many more features that WUW does not offer. You will notice with AN that your Names, Dates, and to-do list are all interconnected with that little AN button into one very efficient system. WUW is simply a list of upcoming events/to-dos/etc in a well designed screen. it does this, as I said, wonderfully, and I wish AN could do it as well. But when you add in all the other features of AN, my choice is still that. Now I happen to know that Ben Gottlieb never rests on his laurels and that he may very well be creating the ultimate to-do/calendar/agenda/contact app even as we speak. When that happens, I will gladly switch, because he write terrific apps that really work the way a user wants them to work.
It may be true that AN does more than WUW; however, WUW is well integrated with MoreInfo, and that combo is by far better than AN.

There is a grading program called GradePoint from Sunburst. Sunburst (800-321-7511) will send you a catalog and if you are a teacher will give free 45 day previews on all of their stuff. i just received Learning profiles for Mac/Newt and GradePoint. I'll post in the Ed. folder when I try them out this school year. Learner Profiles, as I've seen so far, looks pretty good, though not cheap.

You need to go into the WUW prefs, and set the "Show if I've slept longer than..." picker to some nice long time, say a couple of hours, or even "Never". This will prevent WUW from opening every time you start yer Newt.

I'm trying to demo Revelar 1.3. However, when I attempt to connect the message on my PC says that it couldn't open any folders and there is no data available to view.
Admittedly I've not spent much time with it, but the new features on NewtCase 2.2 would seem to do most, if not all, that Remove-It does. Am I missing anything?
The comercial version has a few things that the shareware didn't. You can tap on the word extras and get a list of apps, or archived apps that you can immediately launch. In 1.2, to launch an archived app you had to open newtcase. Also, moving things around in folders and into and out of archivies is a little easier. Finally, 2.2 gievs you the option to archive in a format that NCK can read. You can not quick launch it, and it takes up a little mroe room, though no heap, but it can be backed up. 1.2 does not have this feature.
RemoveIt (now TrashPak) can look at all the soups that packages leave behind. While NewtCase can remove an application, it won't get all the soups. They both are great applications, IMHO.

Craig, are you sure? Have you seen NC 2.2? There's a way to look at and remove soups; it even highlights (bold type) probable orphans. Am I misunderstanding you?
Hal, that is correct. NewtCase 2.2 can look at soups and gives you choices such as Get Info and Remove. Built-in soups are italicized and "possible" orphan soups are in bold. Normal soups are in regular type.
The routing button on all but Directory/System soups also will let you "Get Info" , "Edit" and "Move all entries...".
Sorry, I was referring to the shareware NewtCase (v1.2) not the v2.2 commercial product.
Yes, if you have the commercial version of NewtCase, TrashPak is a bit redundant.

I tried ScrollEx 3.2 and feel it is an excellent piece of software to manage my 4MB card. It allows you to archive packages to keep your heap space overhead under control. But before I pay the shareware fee, I decided to try NewtCase because I have heard so much about it. I removed ScrollEx and am now trying out NewtCase 1.2.
Has anyone else used both? Is there any advantage using NewtCase which is not available via ScrollExtras? The immediate difference I see is that with ScrollExtras, you can still see the archive packages in your Extras draw, they are not hidden from your eye or require you to launch another package to view them or run them. So I would say that this is an advantage of ScrollExtras. Plus ScrollExtras lets you move packages, remove them, and I think one or two more things.
But would I be in error in assuming that with NewtCase 1.2 you can keep your heap overhead lower since NewtCase is not running all the time which I assume ScrollExtras is (running all the time)? Or does NewtCase also run in the background? Or am I wrong in assuming that ScrollExtras does run in the background when installed?

Another Newton product I picked up while I was at the Macworld Expo Boston last week was FirstClass Retriever+. This is a client software for online services using the FirstClass software (by SoftArc). This grabbed my attention immediately since I just upgraded my online system using FirstClass software.
FC Retriever allows the Newton to remotely (or locally) connect to a FirstClass server (BBS), check your e-mail, browse conferences, read messages, compose messages, replies, etc...
I had an opportunity to use it yesterday, and was pleased with as much I could with this client software for the Newton.
So if you access any FirstClass systems, and would like to log on with your Newton, FC Retriever does the job. It will even do a "flash session" just as you can do with AOL. FC Retriever is available via Black Labs (not aware of any other Newton products they produce).

I've paid the fee for, and used, ScrollEx 3.2. It's a good package, the only downside being, as I understand it, the fact that displaying the icons in the Extras drawer takes a bit more heap than doing things the NewtCase way. ScrollEx features I liked included being able to assign specific packages to button names; and tapping the extreme lower right of the screen brings up a heap readout, and tells you what functions you've assigned to the button names.
Nevertheless, wanting to reduce heap use, I've switched to NewtCase 2.2. I don't find the launch and use of the ancillary program (QuickPicker, I think it's called) a major slowdown. And 2.2 (commercial version of the shareware) does everything RemoveIt! does vis-a-vis removing packages, soups, etc.
It used to be that you could run both ScrollEx and NewtCase, until the latter came out with 2.2. Now it seems they will no longer co-exist.
The author of ScrollEx is in Paris. I e-mailed him once with a question. He responded. A further question brought no reply. Busy man, I guess. The NewtCase guys, however, are very responsive via e-mail.

NewtCase also allows you to hide packages without icons. The new version of NC addresses nearly all the shortcomings between it and ScrollEx
Is it possible to define a Graffiti shortcut that will include a built-in function, like @Date Stamp? It seems undoable to me. . .
That is, can I do the shortcut pen-stroke, a two letter code, and get something like "8/15/95 Did Laundry." ?

If you want to really complicate things, you might want to try out NewtCase 2.2. It is the commercial version of the software and it is _very_ good. It does remove the icons from the drawer, but then I always foudn they clutter it anyway. I actually do not use it, though I have previewed it.
Newton Utilities is included on the NEP that I have had for sseveral months now. Anyone that wants to know how good it is, I'll tell you. For a pogram wtitten for newt by Apple, I was very Unimpressed. The software manager, to do archiving, et al, has very few features. If you archive a package, the only way to run it again is to open the Software Mgr, unarchive it (which takes ten to twenty seconds), then run it, and finally re-archive it again. With ScrollEx and NewtCase allowing you to de-archive, run, re-archive with one or two taps, thats pretty lame. The memory mgr is ok, though not great. It looks fopr orhpaned soups and asks if you want to delete them. If you are somewhat familiar with the soups you can do as good a job, if not better with something like removeit. The scrapbook orks well, but I haven't found much use for it. And the shortcuts gives you an editable toolbar, great, but it is on the text area. You can not place it on the bottom off of the text. I don't like having it take up space.
Suffice to say, I have archived some packages I rarely use, though I will eventually get a real archiving pkg. Since it came with the NEP I do not feel bad about not using any of it. I do, however, use graffiti and AN all of the time so it was well worth it.

When I said "Newton Utilities" what my addled brain was referring to was "Newton Tools". I have downloaded the demo version from here on line a second time, but it will not function and displays "This demo has expired, etc." on all three of our MessagePads, including one that was acquired after the previous test of this package (or demo, since it was only partially enabled). Has anyone had any experience with this package? If so, would you please post a review of same for our benefit.

I'm using NewtTools and love it...it seems to me to be the best of its lot.
It is make up of several packages: first, two autoparts: a button bar for quick access to a great variety of features (all installed and NewtTools archived apps), prefs, fonts, a bullet tool, restart and sleep control, hide or bring forward the notepad (while in any app), an extended clipboard, etc.; next package is Scroll Menus (which does what it says); and then the four packages: MemTool, which does diagnostic tests and finds orphaned soups, bad package data, etc; Pack Tool, which archives packages and/or moves them from stores; and two soup tools--SoupTool and SoupEdit...which provide the standard soup management tools.
It packs a lot of what is available in other shareware packages into one set and Ascribe seems to be a solid publisher (they actually emailed me--a registered user--an upgrade without me having to read about it and ASK them...(which seems rather rate these days). I like NewtCase better for archiving stuff that I don't often use...but for things I use once a week of so, I like the NewtTools interface better...

You should look at NewtDb in the Newton software files here on AOL. I tried demos FilePad and Leverage several months ago. They both are expensive and seemed kinda slow to me not to mention the constant out of memory messages. I have recently been trying NewtDb and like the speed, don't get out of memory messages, and the price seems pretty good. I am going to try it a little bit more but I am 99% sure I will register it.

I actually found Leverage a bit faster and found it to be a pretty good program. But yes, it is more expensive. Then again, with respect to speed, I imported a 7500 name corporate phone so I have a pretty demanding application. Interesting thing about the 7500 names, it took at least4-6 hours to import. Not sure exactly how long as I fell asleep.

After 2 years of looking for the perfect Newton package, I'd say: Wake Up Week, Notion, QuickFigure Pro, NewtCase 2.3 (does most of what Remove It does, allows you to move packages between card and internal, and saves that still so precious heap space), and Pocketmoney. These are among the best executed, best designed packages around. PS-Almost anything by Ben Gottlieb or Hardy Macia is almost guaranteed to be worth checking out.

Just a reiteration of my vote for best Newton Database, which is NewtDB.
The author just added a quick find function and it is FAST!!! I have a 7500 record database and it finds an entry within a second. Also, it is relational and displays related records just about as fast. I have found it to be just about Perfect for my needs. And what am I using it for? A corporate phone book. 7500 name db, 600 fax number db and 300 location db all linked together relationaly.

Tip #002 tells you how to easily unstuff Newton .sit files on your PC. I don't know of any ftp site with all zip files--most Newton files come stuffed since they are written on Macs.
The PDA Forum has always taken files as we receive them--that means PCers may have to learn how to unstuff sit files just as Mac users have to deal with zip files. IF an uploader wants to provide a program in both forms, we'll post both. But given the fact the PDA Staff is a small collection of volunteers, we simply don't have the time or resources to provide files in both formats.

People have been asking around and calling HealthCare Communications for info on PowerForms. Unfortunately, to this point the only response they have gotten is that it will be shipping soon and that there is a demo posted on line for them to view - HCC also has a demo they can send out. This has been very confusing and frustrating for everyone and HCC is sorry for that.
However, we want to say that - "YES, the PRODUCT is REAL and YES it will be available soon." We decided to hold back the release to fully harness the potential of the PDA platform. Because of our working relationship with Apple Computer, we have had to refrain ourselves from discussing when it will actually be available etc. We can tell you this: The latest and greatest info about the PDA world will be announced to everyone in the very near future. With that news will be the "official" release of PowerForms.

Anybody have a recommendation for a good scrolling enhancement for the Newton notepad? I'm tired of the only option being a complete page scroll by the built in scroll. It's real hard to work with if you are creating a drawing or table that crosses a page boundary.

The features are pretty self explanatory. One thing to be aware of is that when you index your information the first time, you should be running from an AC adaptor or with fresh batteries. The first run through takes quite a while and you don't want to have your MessagePad time out in the middle of the process.
Also, check out the additional countries added at your discretion, the ability to set the default card style, and the ability to set which folder you open into when starting up the Names application.

The Personal Media 1.5 Demo (MAC) that I recently posted to the Commercial Software Demo's section does not download to Newton's properly. It looks like I uploaded a corrupted package.
The PC version (a zip) file appears to be uncorrupted.
I uploaded a new version the should fix the problem, but for now please do not use the demo.
For the people who have already downloaded the demo and found out that it does not work, please accept my apologies for the inconvience.

Actually, this turned out to be my own fault. After I completely erased my Newton 100 of all data, I was able to get the Personal Media demo to run. Even then, it ran far slower than it was meant to run - I assume.
In the readme, it says it needs 40k of heap space to run. I guess they weren't just whistlin' Dixie, eh?
I think it was clearly meant for a later model Newton.

The problem I was having with the Personal Media Demo turned out to be my own fault. When I completely erased my Newton 100's internal memory, the program ran. It didn't seem to be much happier, though; it ran VERY slowly. It obviously isn't going to be of any use on my old Newton.

Personal Media V1.5 DOES support support both the Newton's built-in handwriting recognition and Graffiti. Are you certain you downloaded the V1.5 demo?

How loaded with software is your newton? Heap space? I've never had a restart occour with V1.5 or any of the beta versions after 1.1 and of course, I use Personal Media everyday. Are you running on a 110 or 120? Do you have the latest newton o/s update installed?
You can always check the amount of heap space available from within Personal Media by double tapping on the mem icon in the file cabinet. Do you have more than one workspace open at a time? Sometimes people have multiple workspaces open at the same time and don't realize it, that can use up heap space pretty quickly.

I purchased some software for my Newton from MacMall and have tried for 2 (yes 2) weeks to contact customer support and have always been put on terminal hold. I have waited as long as 4 hours at a time. I further sent Email but received a Warning Notice that my message had not been delivered.
Has anyone else had problems with MacMall? Have they gone "belly up"? By the way, if you call the order line you will talk to someone within 5 minutes but they will not deal with customer service problems.

I have a Micromac cache card which is not working which I purchased from MacMall. Will let you know how I do. I tried dealing with Micromac and can not get through on the phone or get them to answer my Fax. AOL also can not deliver to their internet address (assuming it exists)

I got a MicroMac chache accelleraqtor from Mac Zone.
It did not work out of the box, but after getting through, I got a replacement, and it works. They are very tough to get ahold of. They do not return calls, and the line is BUSY.

Look in the Software Libraries for "Aloha". It ain't cheap ($50 shareware fee I think?), and you can only use it to send/receive mail, but what it does it does very well.
At least, that's what I keep hearing. I don't get my Newton until tomorrow ::drool::.

Actually, you cannot get it from the software libaray. You'll need to look in "what's new" in keyword PDA, then open the web links, and its at catamount software (web) or uioa/amug (ftp). AOL won't let us put in in the libs here, since it's not "legal" to reverse-engineer the connection protocol. Aloha is quite good (I own a copy) and can actually ge purchased with a $5 or $10 discount (read the readme) so it's between $40 and $45.
